Flying Like A Fox

There are a plethora of adventure options in Victoria Falls (something I’ll write about in more detail tomorrow) but I only go for one of them… the Flying Fox zip line over Victoria Falls gorge, offered by Wild Horizons.

I’m really here to scope out the spectacular gorge views — check out photos from this platform. (Note the main bridge connecting Zambia and Zimbabwe way off in the distance.)

I have no intention of doing the gorge swing (a slightly less scary version of bungee jumping), but I am intrigued by the Flying Fox. It’s like a zip line, but the harness connects in the back so that the adrenaline junkie tourist essentially flies like superman across the gorge. I share my business card and Wild Horizons very kindly offers me a complimentary run.

Well there’s no turning back now… I’m about to jump off this platform:

Once I’m all harnessed up, the guide calls me to the platform.

I decide to strap my GoPro to my wrist. Here’s my view right before the jump.

Video at the end of this post! For now, a photo recap…

It’s quite straightforward, really — I run and leap with my arms outstretched as momentum carries me halfway across the gorge. I make this face:

And this one:

(So I cheated and took those photos after, since I was not nearly composed enough to coordinate that during the initial run.)

Once I’ve come to a stop, I reach behind me to grab the green rope. My guide on the platform will then use it to tow me back to him. This process takes a few minutes, allowing for photo ops and time to enjoy this epic view of the gorge.

I am so sorry this post is, like, 15 images of my face. It makes me uncomfortable too.

Almost back to the platform…

Top notch service here! Great guide.

Once I get back to the platform, they ask if I want to do it again since I’m all harnessed up. Ummm, YES!! And since I know how it works this time, my second Flying Fox experience is way more fun and not at all scary.

Video or it didn’t happen…

So much fun. If you’re looking for a little adventure (not a bungee jump!) then the Flying Fox is the perfect compromise. Wild Horizons offers all sorts of adventure packages and Trip Advisor reviews rank them #2 out of 25 sightseeing tours in Victoria Falls.

Many thanks to Wild Horizons for hosting my Flying Fox zipline at Victoria Falls! Opinions are my own.

    • It was! Not scary at all. I think I like it more than zip lining because of the superman position — you really feel like you’re flying.
