CT Day Trip: Milford & Silver Sands Park

I’ve gone on some fun day trips around Connecticut that I’ve been meaning to share on here… today’s post recaps a visit to beaches around Milford and a new-to-me coffee shop that is pretty rad.

This visit was spurred by my diligence to get 10,000 steps a day on my Misfit (a $20 Fitbit knock-off), and I was looking for a scenic route near the water where I could pound out my steps. I picked a random side street near the beach, easily found parking, and set off on a walk while listening to podcasts.

I was most curious to visit Silver Sands State Park, a small island with a sandbar that is exposed at low tide. We’ll get there in a moment.

This whole stretch of sand is scenic — well maintained beach houses to gaze at, not too crowded, and water views the whole way.

About 20 minutes into the walk I approach Silver Sands State Park. It’s not quite low tide, but enough of the sand bar is exposed that visitors can easily walk the final distance in waist-deep water. The island looks fun to explore. I haven’t brought my bathing suit — I’m here to walk / consume podcasts — so I push forward. But this would be a fun place to return to with family / friends, maybe with a picnic in tow.

The next stretch of sand down to the Walnut Beach pier is the prettiest yet — and even better, it’s connected by a new and clean boardwalk, so I don’t have to get sand in my sneakers. The next batch of photos were taken on that boardwalk.

At this point I reach the pier at Walnut Beach and walk out for photos. It’s a beautiful sunny day and the colors pop nicely.

After getting exercise I’m ready for an afternoon caffeine fix. I’ve picked Cafe Atlantique in the center of town, as it’s highly rated on Yelp.

It’s adorable. And the food looks good (they have bakery items and a full lunch menu). They get major props for creative latte flavors — that is the way into this java-loving girl’s heart. I want to try all of these:

After much deliberation, I picked the Jack-O-Latte (marshmallow, pumpkin, vanilla) and a maple scone. Great choices.

I sat here reading for quite awhile. They have wifi too and next time I’ll bring my laptop to edit photos — it’s a great atmosphere.

Back soon with another Connecticut day trip recap. If you haven’t already guessed, coffee will figure into the next one too!
