Watering Hole Encore

Didn’t last night at the watering hole look like a good time? All day long I’ve been eager to going back. I hope those rhinos make a return engagement.

Tonight’s sunset crowd is remarkably quieter — there is hardly anyone here; I don’t have to throw any elbows to create space for me and my 5 D Mark II. That couple below has an entire cone-shaped hut to themselves.

I will never tire of African sunsets.

That’s Lisa and Rachel from my tour below. Love these ladies!

As Lisa demonstrates, these rustic wooden benches are the perfect place to curl up with a journal and reflect at the end of the day. It’s calm and silent.

This evening’s activity is much more subdued than yesterday’s. Rachel and Lisa tell me about an adult male lion with a full mane they spotted earlier, but he’s off in the distance now and doesn’t venture any closer after sunset.

At last, a young rhino wanders towards us.

Giraffes continue to huddle in the background, too nervous to approach until it’s fully dark. But their regal necks make a bold statement against the neon horizon.

It’s a quiet night at the watering hole but no less enjoyable than last evening. I could stay here all week.

Back at camp we pitch in to get dinner ready — kebabs with veggies and meat. (There are all-veggie options available too.)

Riaan grills them over the fire while Juliana whips up many side dishes.

Side dishes include corn on the cob, potatoes, a carrot dish, and freshly made cole slow. We are so spoiled.

After dinner I go to the lodge bar to edit photos while connected to a power source. There isn’t internet (yet) but they expect to get it soon.

I return to the watering hole just before bed. It’s quite chilly at night but I brave the cold for a few final minutes of serenity.

Etosha National Park has been a big hit. One last post coming tomorrow — my best video footage of the area.

Namibia, you’ve set the bar high and this tour has just started. Can’t wait to see what else is in store.

I visited Namibia on a 12-day tour from Windhoek to Cape Town with Acacia Africa. They discounted my tour in exchange for blogging and photography; opinions are my own.
