Surfing the Sand Dunes

File this under something I’ve never seen before: surfing on sand dunes.

Our super cool Kiwi tour guide (a sexagenarian with platinum dreads) gives us a brief lesson.

Time to trek up the hill. Where’s the lift?

I make the unfortunate decision to sit out this activity and photograph from the sidelines. There’s a simple reason: surfers have to dig their bare feet into the sand to put the brakes on, and after two bunionectomies I don’t want to traumatize my toes any further. But it looks fun and if my feet were in good working order I’d join in.

This is an activity that’s equally fun for participants and spectators: I have a blast watching everyone scream their heads off as they zoom downhill.

I turn around and check out the desert scenery behind us.

Good times all around!

Check back tomorrow for the final part of our Cape Reigna adventure: driving on Ninety Mile Beach.

  1. Oh no, you made the right decision. Don’t want to be messing with bunions. Leave it for the guys with the really gnarly looking feet.

    • I felt bad for “chickening out,” but if I hurt my feet it would disrupt my travels and I couldn’t risk that. It looked fun, though!

    • Yeah, for the most part I don’t feel like my bunion surgeries hold me back, but in this case they do! Oh well, I’d rather have working feet!
